You own brass, and they may have been in your family for generations. But you could still be making 3 mistakes that are sure to ruin brass. Especially if you had brass for generations, and then a mom or nani started using Brasso – because it was convenient – because sorry moms and dads – that’s the generation that started with all the bad habits with brass! Read on to see what I mean!

What are the 3 common mistakes?
Steel Wool or Scrub Pads
No, no, please no! They scratch the surface and remove patina. That aged look, which adds depth and value, is gone for good. Scrub pads are a shortcut to make brass shine – but they scratch your brass so badly, they will never look the same again!

Harsh Cleaners
Chemical polishes like Brasso (yes, yes I know your mum used to swear by it!) s are too abrasive for vintage or handcrafted brass. They strip the soul out of it, leaving it raw and unnatural. Worse still, many contain ammonia, which can corrode the surface, a mistake that will ruin your brass in the long run!

Leaving Moisture
Whether it’s water from a rushed rinse or oil that wasn’t wiped off, residual moisture is the quickest route to corrosion and ruining of brass. You’ll see black spots, green tarnish, and long-term dullness. They need to be gently washed and wiped bone dry!

What to do instead?
Never let your brass air dry with the rest of your bhartan. Always use soft natural cloths, mild homemade pastes (wait for my next post for a Magic Cleaning hack), and ensure complete drying. Store items wrapped in cotton when not in use, especially in humid places.
Stay tuned for the next blog post on the Oh my Brass series! Ww talk about a simple brass cleaner you can whip up with traditional Indian ingredients. No preservatives from a satchet or messy tamarind paste.
