It’s that time of the year again – when fairy lights twinkle outside windows, and pretty diyas add light and colour to the night sky.
Here’s a quick and simple recipe to make your own diyas out of a salt, spice and white flour dough.
Recipe (makes a baking tray full of assorted diyas)
1 cup flour
2 tbsp salt
2 tbsp cardamon and cinnamon powder
Knead the dough with warm water, and keep aside for 10 minutes. Then roll out or use moulds to make shapes of your choice. Leave these shapes out to dry in the sun. When they are hard and dry, bake them at your oven’s highest temperature for 10 minutes. Keep a close eye on the oven, because the smaller, flat shapes will bake faster. You can turn the big shapes over for a proper all-around bake on both sides.
When the diyas are baked, cool them down completely, and start painting them with acrylic colors of your choice!
Enjoy the Festivities!
