After a long month of anniversary celebrations, it’s back to business again. This week, we feature the house tour of Mumbai based art director, Mathanki Kodavasal. Mathanki’s décor ideas came from design sites on the internet and TV shows like Top design. The space is just about 900 sq ft and has been done up from scratch. I love the way she has played around with colors to give the apartment a vibrant feel and the brilliant idea of turning a bedspread into blind. Mathanki explains how she created this cozy place as we go through the tour. Enjoy!

The apartment was a 2 bhk, but we broke down a wall, and converted one of the bedrooms to a study cum bar, with a window opening to the kitchen. Made the space look a lot bigger. The idea was to make the house as open and airy and bright as possible.

Our favorite room is the study, and I’m so glad we decided to experiment with the brick wall. It gives the whole room a very warm and cozy feel.

While looking for blinds, we couldn’t find any design or pattern we liked. But we saw some Portico bedsheets which had some brilliant colorful patterns, and the shop guy told us that he could make blinds out of them. (I loved this idea!)

dark wood and minimalistic modern furniture at the living area

We (hubby and me) both like dark wood, and minimalistic modern furniture, and it suits small spaces. We designed most of the pieces ourselves, and got it made.

The kitchen tiles, the bedroom wall

My favorite color is aqua…its soothing, not harsh and very pleasing to the eye. So you will see a lot of aqua in the house. The kitchen tiles, the bedroom wall. We played around with textures.

The aqua theme continues to the master bath

The aqua theme continues to the master bath, I was trying to achieve a very good- earthy feel. Wooden rafters on the ceiling with embedded ‘iron an’ lights for a dramatic effect.

I think over all we mixed and matched our ideas, and we were quite surprised ourselves at how our home turned out finally.

  1. Hi Key Bunch,
Your posts are very enjoyable! And love this house tour- the aqua wall is gorgeous!

  2. And I forgot to mention that fabric screen at the window ..LOVELY!

  3. Absolutely fab post. Love the sheet used as a blind and all the artwork. But my top fav is the kitchen backsplash and the unusual colour combination. Bold and dramatic but all the lines are clean 🙂

    Veryyyy nice

  4. What a lovely way to use aqua!! So vibrant.. Love the earthy colors.

  5. Beautiful. What a great pick to do a house tour! I was stunned to see how a relatively small space of 900 sq.ft could be aesthetically decorated to look so good. Che frame on the wall and the Portico blinds were my favorites.

  6. Rekha, sharon, such fun to see mathanki's home featured here. I had done a post on Stylkist on her home too.
    Mathanki, you go, girl!!

  7. @The Ketchup Girl – so that's where I had seen it. Mathanki's name sounded familiar, and I have been racking my brains from the last coupla days, trying to place her!:)
    Thanks!

Rekha, great post, and knowing how mch you love colors on walls, I am sure you thoroughly enjoyed putting it together 😉

Mathanki, I love the fact that your home looks so spacious, despite measuring jst 900 sq ft! Your idea of knocking down a bedroom wall is super. Most people want as many rooms as possible, even at the cost of having tiny boxed in enclosures, but your idea is simply fab! Love the colors, and your backsplash in particular!

  8. looks so compact nd beautiful thnks,..

  9. Thanks folks, I simply fell in love with some of the ideas used here. Sharon, you are right about the colors on the walls, it takes so much guts to try out such colors.

Love the aqua wall in the bedroom … What shade is this exactly ? I so want this at my new place but ever shade of aqua I try seems wrong 🙁
