Hidden Gem- Zilla Panchayat Canteen, Mangalore: Award-Worthy Sustainable Design

The Most well-designed Government Canteen you’ve Never Heard of (Until Now) in Mangaluru

A government canteen in Mangaluru that was earmarked for closure has been reimagined by a landscape designer. It is now a bright, airy space that proves beautiful design and meaningful employment can go hand in hand. Sometimes, the most extraordinary transformations happen in the most unexpected places.

Beautiful walls, an award winning design, and great food.

The Discovery

It all began when friend and landscape designer Sabrish Narayan, mentioned that he was re-designing a Government canteen. I knew he was great at design, but the mention of the word Government made me wonder what he could possibly add to a standard Indian Government canteen! I was wrong. And pleasantly surprised that his superlative design skills led this project from a Government canteen (I don’t deny they have their own old-world charm) to a retro-modern design haven!

The Before Story

What once was a dilapidated and uninspiring government canteen serving employees of the Zilla Panchayat branch in Chilimbi, has been given a complete makeover. The structure remained, but everything else? That’s where the magic happened.

Here are some before images of the place.

This isn’t just any canteen—it is now run by the designer Narayan himself. True to its mission, the canteen employs women, giving them not just jobs but dignity, skills, and independence.

Sabrish Narayan – The Designer Turned Food Entrepreneur

Sabrish Narayan is the reason why some of Mangalore’s biggest properties have the most stunning gardens and landscapes.

He is also an antiques afficionado, and has a keen sense of design and aesthetics. Throw in a big generous heart, and it is easy to see why he was drawn to this project. Narayan comes from a background in saw mills, and his knowledge of wood is astounding. He has also designed a few homes in Mangalore. You can benefit from this article about him on this blog.

When I wanted to break some walls and revamp my studio in Pune, I trusted his judgement over those of interior designers, and it has stood me in good stead.

The Sustainable and Retro-Modern Aesthetic

This transformation is all about clever, sustainable design choices. Leftover tiles from other projects became the star of the show, creating patterns and visual interest that money can’t always buy. Mixed with carefully selected bought elements, the designer achieved that perfect retro-modern balance—nostalgic yet fresh, familiar yet surprising.

I love these images of the project taking shape!

Most of this reno is privately funded by Sabrish Narayan himself. And on a low budget, he has achieved so much! The teams put to work, are his own. The material given by his trusted vendors, some on credit and some gifted – from leftover tiles to the most beautiful cast iron touches, it has been a labour of love and collaboration!

The renovated canteen – astounding design!

The space now breathes. Half painted wall colours, benches lined with tiles, a clean floor and lovely cross ventilation. The bulk of the look was achieved with leftover tiles from projects, a block of acacia wood, a few select cast iron touches, and glass panels. All this makes it clean, airy, and those lovely touches make you forget you’re in a government building. The best part? This canteen is open to the general public, not just government employees. Good design, it turns out, is for everyone.

The Show-Stopping Dividers: An Award-Worthy Design

Now, let me tell you about the piece de resistance (at least for the designer in me)—three moveable dividers that are nothing short of genius. Using just five materials, the designer Sabrish Narayan has created space-defining elements that are both functional and absolutely stunning:

  • Acacia Wood: Warm and sturdy
  • Cast Iron: Industrial and strong
  • Tiles: Those leftover beauties adding pattern and color
  • Terracotta: Earthy and authentic
  • Glass: Light and modern

The Open Kitchen: Where Transparency Meets Taste

Here’s where this canteen really shines. The open kitchen plan with a large island area is designed for both functionality and trust. Customers can see everything—and I mean everything. Separate cooking sections and dedicated stoves for vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes ensure no cross-contamination, respecting everyone’s dietary preferences.

This transparency isn’t just about hygiene (though it is impeccably clean). It’s about building trust as you watch your food being prepared with care. You understand that what goes on your plate is made with attention and respect.

The large island becomes a stage where cooking is performance, where the ritual of preparing food is honored rather than hidden away. It’s modern restaurant design at its best—functional, beautiful, and honest.

The Heart of It All: The Food

Beautiful spaces and good intentions are wonderful, but a canteen lives or dies by its food. And this one? It delivers beautifully.

Rather than depend on overly styled pics, I wanted to show you the actual food platter I received. So hygienic, and incredibly tasty!

The menu is simple, home-cooked, and nutritious—the kind of food that reminds you of meals at home. Fresh catch arrives daily, so the fish is always the star of the table. No fuss, no pretense, just honest, wholesome cooking that nourishes.

There’s something deeply satisfying about enjoying well-prepared, simple food in a thoughtfully designed space, knowing that your meal is also empowering women. It elevates the everyday ritual of eating into something more meaningful.

Why This Matters

This project proves so many things at once. Government spaces don’t have to be drab. Public canteens can be destinations. And sustainability isn’t a compromise—it’s an opportunity.

With vision, creativity, and resourcefulness—using leftover materials and thoughtful design—public spaces can become destinations that serve body, soul, and community.

This Canteen is sustainable design at its finest. It’s democratic design—accessible to everyone. And it’s a reminder that good design isn’t about endless budgets; it’s about endless creativity and deep purpose.

They Need You

Here’s the thing—this entire renovation is privately sponsored. Every tile, every piece of acacia wood, every thoughtful design element came from someone believing in this vision enough to lend to the project. But beautiful spaces and good intentions need something more to survive: they need customers.

This canteen needs to amp up sales to break even and continue serving the high-quality food and experience it’s become known for. The vision of what a government canteen can be depends on it. The proof that empowerment initiatives can be sustainable depends on it.

So if you’re in Mangalore—or even if you’re planning a visit—make this canteen a part of your itinerary. Bring your family for lunch. Take your colleagues for a working meal. Order that fresh catch. Enjoy the home-cooked simplicity. Watch the open kitchen in action.

Your meal does more than fill your stomach. It proves that design-led, purpose-driven spaces can thrive. It tells future sponsors that investing in good causes pays off—not just in feel-good stories, but in actual, sustaining community change.

Every plate ordered, every meal shared, every visitor who walks through those doors is a vote for a better way of doing things.
